Silent Type Generator vs Open Type Generator: Which One Fits Your Project Best?

Silent generators, also known as enclosed or canopy-type generators, are fully enclosed diesel generator sets. The engine, alternator, radiator and control system are all housed within a soundproof enclosure, which is filled with high-density sound-absorbing foam. Combined with intake and exhaust silencers, the overall noise level is typically kept between 70 and 78 decibels at a distance of seven metres. The casing is treated with an electrostatic powder coating, and the colour can be customised to match the customer’s brand or the installation environment—common standard colours include white, yellow, green, blue and red. Another advantage of this fully enclosed design is that it provides protection against rain, dust and sunlight; consequently, silent generators are widely used in hospitals, hotels, data centres, residential areas and any other projects with strict requirements regarding appearance and noise levels.
Open type generators, also known as ‘bare units’ or ‘industrial generators’, lack an enclosure, leaving the engine, alternator, radiator and control system completely exposed. The advantages of this design are clear: it is simple in construction, lighter in weight and, for the same power output, significantly cheaper per unit than sound-insulated models; furthermore, as all components are visible, routine inspections and on-site repairs are quicker and more cost-effective. Of course, open-frame generators also have inherent drawbacks—noise levels typically range from 95-105 decibels at a distance of seven metres, and long-term outdoor use requires the construction of an additional generator room or enclosure. Precisely because of these characteristics, open-frame generators are often the preferred choice for mining sites, remote construction sites, agricultural irrigation, rental fleets, and any other locations situated far from residential areas.
So how should you choose? It’s quite simple: if your project is located in an urban area, close to residential neighbourhoods, or requires night-time operation, a silent generator is the safer option; if you have a limited budget, a short project duration, or the unit is to be installed in an open area far from people, then an open-frame generator offers better value for money.
